Two Urine Benzodiazepine Screens Had Different Sensitivities Against Serum Analysis

A prospective poisoning study found that the choice of urine screening kit affected benzodiazepine detection performance.

A prospective poisoning study found that the choice of urine screening kit affected benzodiazepine detection performance.

The comparison

Among 117 patients, the reported benzodiazepine sensitivities were 78.6% for Triage DOA and 90.5% for INSTANT-VIEW M-1 against the study’s qualitative serum analysis. Performance also varied by drug class, so the investigators did not identify one kit as universally superior.

The matrix comparison limits the meaning

Urine screening and serum analysis have different detection windows, targets, and thresholds. A discordance is therefore not automatically proof that one result was erroneous. These percentages apply to the study’s patient mix and reference definition, rather than every benzodiazepine or laboratory. A negative screen cannot reliably exclude all class exposure, and a positive class result does not quantify concentration or impairment. Interpreting a case requires the assay, specific analyte coverage, sampling time, and any confirmatory testing actually performed.
