Italian Emergency-Psychiatry Study Found a Higher Benzodiazepine Prescription Share During Fewer Consultations

A larger percentage of consultations can coexist with fewer total presentations.

What the source reports

The nine-hospital comparison examined corresponding periods in 2019 and 2020. Psychiatric consultations declined during lockdown, while the share involving benzodiazepine prescriptions increased. Case mix and some other medication patterns also changed.

Limits and uncertainty

The analysis involved service contacts, including repeat consultations, rather than a general-population sample. Access barriers and changing severity can affect both attendance and treatment. A greater prescription share does not automatically mean greater total consumption or proven therapeutic benefit.

Application to expert review

For interpreting emergency-care trends, retain the denominator and distinguish individual people from consultations. Do not infer a population-wide increase in benzodiazepine ingestion solely from the percentage of a reduced caseload. The study describes a historical service pattern under unusual access conditions.
