Does CBD Reach Higher Blood Levels in Women? What the Human Studies Showed

A 2022 scoping review by Matheson and colleagues found only 12 eligible studies on sex differences in cannabidiol effects or pharmacokinetics. Eight used preclinical models and four involved humans. The human results gave different answers depending on the sample and question.

What the review found in people

Two patient studies reported no sex difference in CBD pharmacokinetics. One study in healthy participants found greater plasma CBD concentrations in females than males. The fourth human study examined responses to trauma recall and found no evidence of sex differences in that outcome. Drug levels and behavioral outcomes answer separate questions.

Why the answer depends on the experiment

A sex comparison also depends on how the dose was given, the formulation, and when blood was drawn. The review identifies a potential source of variability that deserves direct testing under common conditions. It offers too little consistent human evidence to assign an individual an expected concentration or dose correction based on sex.
