Korean Dental Claims Study Found Midazolam Was the Most Common Sedative Recorded for Dementia Care
A national claims analysis described sedation and general anesthesia during dental treatment in people with dementia. It counted care patterns rather than directly testing sedative safety.
A national claims analysis described sedation and general anesthesia during dental treatment in people with dementia. It counted care patterns rather than directly testing sedative safety.
The reported care
The study identified 4,383 patients with dementia who received dental treatment under sedation or general anesthesia between 2007 and 2019. It recorded 1,515 sedation cases and 3,396 general-anesthesia cases.
Midazolam was the most commonly recorded drug for sedation. The analysis also examined age, treatment type, and annual changes in behavioral-management methods.
Patients and procedures are different denominators
One person can undergo multiple procedures, and claims identify billed diagnoses and treatments rather than a complete behavioral or physiologic record. Case selection can reflect cooperation, disease severity, and procedure complexity.
The paper cannot establish that midazolam was safer or more effective than alternatives merely because it was commonly used. An individual dental-sedation review requires indication, administration, monitoring, airway events, and recovery. Preserve the distinction between sedation and general anesthesia and between numbers of people, visits, and procedures.
